Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Cryo-EM at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Houston, United States
Application deadline: 04 Nov 2026
Professor Bissan Al-Lazikani, within the
Department of Genomic Medicine, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with experience in single-particle cryo-EM structure determination. This position will be based in Dr. Al-Lazikani's laboratory and will focus on applying structural biology approaches to innovative AI-enabled drug discovery programs. To support these efforts, the successful candidate will have access to the necessary cryo-EM infrastructure and expertise, including guidance from the structural biology team in their Therapeutics Discovery Division.
Dr. Al-Lazikani's research integrates advanced machine learning methods with drug discovery, for target identification, in-silico screening, hit discovery, and lead optimization. By leveraging extensive clinical and molecular datasets, her group develops specialized AI models to identify novel therapeutic opportunities in defined cancer patient populations. After choosing the target protein, candidate compounds are identified initially through computational approaches before being experimentally validated using biophysical methods and biochemical assays.
The postdoctoral fellow will play a key role in generating structural insights through cryo-EM and, where appropriate, X-ray crystallography, elucidating protein-ligand interactions to support structure-based drug design. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, structural biology, and translational drug discovery. For scientists interested in applying structural biology to real-world therapeutic development, this role provides outstanding exposure to modern drug discovery workflows and valuable experience for future careers in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.
