Research Site - Latvia

The Latvia research site is built up of the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (LBMC) and Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (LIOS), both based in Riga.

LBMC is the leading scientific institute in Latvia in molecular biology and biomedicine while LIOS is a leading centre in medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, preclinical pharmaceutical development and biophysical studies.

Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (BMC) is the leading scientific institute in molecular biology and biomedicine in Latvia. Since its establishment in 1993 it has evolved into a powerful scientific centre performing basic as well as applied research in three major directions: molecular medicine; biotechnology and structural biology; molecular ecology and biosystems.

The Institute of Organic Synthesis is involved in the fundamental studies in the field of organic, bioorganic, organoelement, and physical organic chemistry. The other direction of the Institute’s work is medicinal chemistry and drug development field. The Institute has developed 17 pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancer, infectious, cardiovascular, and other diseases. The inventions of the Institute have been protected by around 60 patents.
