In 2024, EMBL will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a historic two-day scientific symposium. This colloquium, ‘From atoms to ecosystems – a new era in life sciences’, will be held both virtually and in-person at Heidelberg on Thursday 4 – Friday 5 July 2024. The event will celebrate EMBL from the moment of its inception, in 1974 when the proposal to bring a world-class life sciences laboratory to Europe was ratified, through to the exciting and vibrant organisation that EMBL represents today.

The symposium sessions will include presentations from current and former EMBL group leaders, as well as former EMBL pre- and postdoctoral fellows. The first day will be focused on research from cells to tissues, spanning genome biology, developmental biology, as well as protein structures and complexes. The second day will focus on digital biology and the current EMBL research programme, ‘Molecules to Ecosystems’, as well as technological advances past and present. The symposium will conclude with a panel on “The past, the present and the future. A discussion with EMBL’s global community”.

Daytime sessions will be primarily intended for scientists, but the conference closing party in the evening on the second day will be an opportunity for guests and all EMBL staff past and present to celebrate together.

Please note that capacities for the onsite symposium and the Friday evening celebration are limited, and that this invitation is for you personally.  Seating will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Consequently, we recommend registering at your earliest convenience, and no later than by 29th March.

If you are unable to come and celebrate in person, you are very welcome to register to attend the symposium virtually. Registration for the online event is open to all, and accessed via the event website where you can also find full information about the programme.
