19ᵗʰ NMR Users Meeting

Conference
Date: 25-Sep-2023 to 29-Sep-2023

Since its inauguration in 1988, AUREMN has been working continuously for the dissemination of NMR and its scientific and technological advancement in Brazil. During this period, the number of superconducting spectrometers in Brazil increased from 1 to 160, approximately. The number of NMR experts has been growing steadily, driven initially by the AUREMN courses, which are offered annually since 1988. Due to these advances catalysed by AUREMN, Brazil now occupies a prominent role in NMR worldwide, being one of the most developed countries in NMR in Central and South America.

The 19th NMR Users Meeting will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 25th to 29th September 2023.

The meeting brings together senior and junior scientists, post-docs as well as graduate and undergraduate students, from academia and industry, creating a unique integrative atmosphere for networking. We expect an attendance of about 200 participants from chemists, physicists, biophysicists, biochemists, biologists, pharmacists, geologists, researchers, and industry experts. We also expect the participation of companies that supply spectrometers, accessories and reagents necessary for NMR.

The meeting will open with keynote speaker Prof. Harald Schwalbe, Director of Instruct-ERIC, giving a talk on the importance of research infrastructures and their collaborations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: "The RNA Structural Biology of SARS-CoV-2: from understanding RNA structural dynamics to targeting RNA".

Prof. Schwalbe will also be on a roundtable describing the organisation and operation of ERICs, such as Instruct. Following his talk, "Vision and Structure of the European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERIC)in Integrated Structural Biology", he will be joined by representatives of several leading scientific institutions in Brazil, including the University of Sao Paulo, which holds an MOU with Instruct.

Another session at the meeting, "Probing Chromatin Function with NMR", will be chaired by Roberto Salinas (University of Sao Paulo), joined by Hugo van Ingen (Bijvoet Center, Utrecht University, Netherlands). Roberto visited the Bijvoet Center in Utrecht to work with Hugo as part of the Instruct-ERIC Staff Exchange programme, organised alongside the EU-LAC ResInfra project.
