Instruct-Bilbao

Instruct-Bilbao regroups 2 platforms: the NMR Facility at the CiC bioGUNE and the Basque Resource for Electron Microscopy (BREM)

CiC bioGUNE NMR Facility

The NMR facility of CiC bioGUNE, founded in 2005, has steadily expanded to now house five modern high-field solution state spectrometers (3x 600, 800, 1000 MHz) with vast accessory (including probeheads, automatic sample changers, mobile flow unit). From the beginning, it has offered access and expert services also to external academic and industrial customers, more recently through the Spanish ICTS program.

The ample high-end NMR equipment is complemented by strong inhouse competence for dedicated protein and glycan sample preparation with stable isotope (13C, 15N, 2H) or chemical (19F) labeling, for NMR methods development and optimisation, and for in-depth NMR data analysis. Thus, CiC bioGUNE can offer all services required for the most sophisticated biomolecular NMR studies on proteins and glycans, their molecular interactions, structure, dynamics, etc. Moreover, CiC bioGUNE offers its services along the entire chain of NMR metabolomics studies. The latter rely on two dedicated 600 MHz IVDr spectrometers, a completely equipped biofluid sample lab, custom software and databases, and specialised staff with a decade of experience in the field, from sample collection, preparation, NMR experimentation to full data analysis and presentation. All cited services for biomolecular (protein, glycan) and metabolomics studies by NMR can be ordered either as modules (e.g. for experienced users with some own resources) or as complete packages (for strangers in the field).

Basque Resource for Electron Microscopy (BREM)

Located in the well-connected city of Bilbao in the north of Spain, the Basque Resource for Electron Microscopy (BREM; https://brem.biofisika.org/) will enhance cryo-EM based structural biology services accessible through INSTRUCT in southern Europe, thanks to specialized cryo-electron microscopy equipment not available elsewhere in the Iberian peninsula. As part of INSTRUCT, BREM will offer services in high-resolution macromolecular cryo-EM and in-situ cryo-ET. These services are enabled by Krios G4 300 kV and Talos F200i G2 200 kV cryo-TEMs, and Aquilos 2+ cryo-FIB-SEM. BREM has highly-qualified technical staff to run the facility and assist national and international users from academia and industry, under the guiding core principles of integrity, scientific excellence, collaboration, transparency, equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion that align with those of INSTRUCT.

Website:      www.cicbiogune.es/research/platforms/nuclearMagneticResonance

Contact Email Address (generic support address):  nmrplatform@cicbiogune.es

For detailed information on our NMR equipment and the NMR related services we provide, please visit our website www.cicbiogune.es/research/platforms/nuclearMagneticResonance or contact with our staff directly.

Standard opening hours: Monday through Thursday 09:00 – 18:00; Friday 09:00 – 15:00

While we prefer physical access due to the complexity of NMR spectroscopic analyses, some remote access can be arranged for after prior consultation. Acquired NMR spectra will be deposited on a secure web server or sent to the customer via their preferred channels.

Visitors arriving at Bilbao international airport can reach CiC bioGUNE by taxi or by public BizkaiBus line A 2153 (exit at bus stop ‘Lekunbiz’ or ‘Teknologia Parkea – Innobasque’, then 10 minutes walk). The airport is well connected to Bilbao downtown by BizkaiBus line A 3247.

Visitors arriving by long distance bus at ‘Bilbao Intermodal’ station or staying in Bilbao can reach CiC bioGUNE by BizkaiBus lines A 3250 (faster) or A 3224 (slower), which leave from the central Plaza Moyua to the Technology Park of Bizkaia (Parque Tecnologico/ Teknologia Parkea). Exit at bus stop ‘Abeletxea/Granja’ in front of the ‘bioGUNE’ building 801 and follow the stairs and path to its right to arrive at building 800 housing the NMR platform.

Alternatively, take suburban train (EuskoTren) line L3 from old town Bilbao (station ‘Casco Viejo / Zazpikaleak’) to ‘Lezama’. Exit at ‘Zamudio’ station to take the connecting Euskotren bus into the Technology Park, again leaving at bus stop ‘Abeletxea/Granja’ (see above). Alternatively, leave already at ‘Lekunbiz’ station for a 15 minutes’ (1.7 km) straight walk to CiC bioGUNE.

Hotel options are numerous in Bilbao downtown. Alternatives in the Technology Park, within walking distance from the CiC bioGUNE, include Hotel “Aretxarte” (www.hotelaretxarte.com), “The Park” (hotelthepark.es), “Artea Errota” (www.arteaerrota.com), and “Seminario” (www.hotelseminariobilbao.com).
