Ivano Bertini was a pioneer of innovative methodologies in the field of NMR spectroscopy who championed technology integration as a foundation for correlative structural biology. Instruct-ERIC presents an award in his name at the Instruct Biennial Structural Biology Conference (IBSBC), recognising scientists who have undertaken frontier research utilising an integrative structural biology approach which aligns with the Instruct vision. The Bertini award is sponsored by Bruker, the world-leading manufacturer of NMR spectrometers.
Nominations are invited for the Ivano Bertini Award 2026 for a significant achievement in any area of integrated structural biology.
Nominations must be submitted by 5pm (CEST) 30 September 2025. Self-nominations are not accepted.
The award will be given solely on the basis of excellence in research and must include structural data as a key component of the research achievement. The award recognises a clearly defined breakthrough (either in scientific knowledge or technology development) and is not for a lifetime achievement.
Previous winners of the award are:
2024 - Martin Blackledge (IBS Grenoble)
2022 - Sjors Scheres (MRC LMB)
2019 - Wolfgang Baumeister (Max Planck)
2017 - Lucia Banci (CERM)
2015 - Stephen Cusack FRS (EMBL)
Eligible nominees:
Individual researchers whose work is conducted in the last 5 to 6 years.
Nominations:
A nomination must be supported by at least one researcher from an Instruct member country or organisation and must include:
1. The completed nomination form
2. CV of the proposed candidate
3. Statement (<150 words) from the proposer(s) indicating why the candidate should be considered for the award
Nominators will be required to register an Instruct account in order to submit a proposition for the award.
 Selection of the Awardee:
The Instruct Independent Scientific Advisory Board will be responsible for selecting the awardee fro the nominations.
The award will be announced at the upcoming Instruct Biennial Structural Biology Conference (28-29 May 2026).
Awardees receive an unrestricted grant of €15,000 and will deliver a lecture at the Instruct Biennial Conference 2026 in Brussels, Belgium.
