About Electron Microscopy, University of Leeds, UK

The Astbury Biostructure Laboratory includes the electron microscopy facility within the Faculty of Biological Sciences. We have a range of state-of-the-art equipment for transmission electron microscopy of biological specimens, from small macromolecular complexes to cells, tissues and organisms.

Our facilities are available to researchers from across the University of Leeds, and external users form academia and industry.

Our facility can operate at Biosafety Level II.

If you already have grids prepared, you should apply for Titan Krios access for high resolution data acquisition (single particle or electron tomography). If you require assistance during project work up, for example optimisation by negative stain, making/optimising/screening cryo-EM grids, please apply for enhanced support, where we can assign the appropriate microscopes for the project stage.

Optimised for single particle and tomography projects. Equipped with a Thermo Fisher Falcon 4 direct electron detector and selectris energy filter. Software includes Thermo Fisher EPU and Tomo for automated data collection.

Optimised for single particle. Equipped with a Thermo Fisher Falcon 4 direct electron detector and volta-potential phase plate. Software includes Thermo Fisher EPU and Tomo.

User Guide

We have two state-of-the-art Titan Krios microscopes equipped with direct electron detectors (DED) for high resolution imaging. Krios 1 is equipped with a FEI Falcon 3 DED and is primarily used for single particle data collection (using FEI EPU software) of macromolecular complexes. Krios 2 is equipped with an energy filtered Gatan K2 summit and a phase plate therefore this microscope is ideal for tomography data collection (Tomo software) and single particle of macromolecular complexes (EPU software).
