As part of its ongoing collaboration with Latin America in the context of the EU-LAC ResInfra project, Instruct-ERIC opened a staff exchange call to allow researchers from Latin American institutions to visit European facilities.
The call invited researchers from any Latin American institution which has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Instruct-ERIC to submit an application to utilise the equipment and machineries available at Instruct’s European centres.
The first of these visits was Alejandro Buschiazzo of Institut Pasteur Montevideo, who is currently working at the Centro Nacional de Biotecnologia (CNB) in Madrid. The aim of the visit is to exchange experiences between both labs, imparting knowledge on crystallography and Cryo-EM, respectively. The visit is taking place for 12 months throughout 2022.
“At the Pasteur Institute in Montevideo we run a crystallography facility. Structural biology is going through a revolution in the novel approach of CryoEM, which is a technique that we are lacking in Latin America, and particularly in Uruguay. So, this is a nice opportunity for me to come, learn, and also exchange our own experience from Montevideo here.”
The aim of the staff exchanges is to share knowledge that would be crucial to the plans to set up regional access centres for structural biology in Latin America.
