Instruct-ERIC Awards First Remote Internships

12-Nov-2021

Instruct-ERIC offers a wide range of services to its users beyond access to advanced structural biology techniques. One such service is the Instruct internship programme.

In response to widespread restrictions on travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Instruct-ERIC has offered remote internship opportunities to PhD students and early-career post-doctoral fellows.

These remote internships differ from standard Instruct placements, in that the user will not need to travel and stay at the host facility; instead, they will receive expert advice and direction from the centre leader, gaining invaluable experience in producing grant submissions and research projects.

The first remote interns will be:

  • Carles Torner of Spain will be supported by EMBL Grenoble, utilising X-ray crystallography, SAXS and NMR to better understand mutations to SMAD transcription factors and characterise SMAD binders that could tackle TGF-b pathway through a pharmacological approach

  • Katharina Weinhäupl of Portugal will be supported by EMBL Hamburg, gaining experience with protein sample preparation and characterisation, and also EMBL Heidelberg’s imaging facility

Each intern will be allocated funds to initiate a pilot project, designed to collect preliminary data with a view to developing the proposal for more conventional funding routes down the line. They will be remotely supported throughout, given advice and benefitting from the experience of their tutor to conduct a successful project.

Whilst the remote internship programme has been developed to provide expertise to early-career scientists whilst minimising travel with respect to COVID-19, the standard Instruct Internship programme continues – the call for applications will commence in early 2022.
