Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI – is currently under commissioning. Seehttp://www.elettra.eu/lightsources/fermi.html for more information.
As a result of a joint project between Elettra and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) (India) the new XRD2 beamline, dedicated to macromolecular crystallography, has just entered the commissioning phase. A superconductive wiggler is the photon source of the beamline which has been designed to operate in the 8-30 keV energy range.
The beamline has been developed to support automatic sample handling (using mounting robots) with remote data collection capabilities via the MXCube software.
