XRD2 beamline manager at Elettra

Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste, Trieste, Italy
Application deadline: 15 Jul 2016

Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI – is currently under commissioning. Seehttp://www.elettra.eu/lightsources/fermi.html for more information.

As a result of a joint project between Elettra and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) (India) the new XRD2 beamline, dedicated to macromolecular crystallography, has just entered the commissioning phase. A superconductive wiggler is the photon source of the beamline which has been designed to operate in the 8-30 keV energy range.
The beamline has been developed to support automatic sample handling (using mounting robots) with remote data collection capabilities via the MXCube software.
See http://www.elettra.eu/elettra-beamlines/xrd2.html for more information.

Job Description: We are seeking an experienced scientist to lead the newly established beamline for macromolecular crystallography. He/she will be in charge of coordinating the scientific activities and technical developments of the beamline, promoting the collaborations with academic and industrial partners/users, as well as managing the budget and submitting proposals to suitable funding agencies.
The selected candidate will participate in the user support activities and coordinate the other beamline staff members. He/she will promote the results at international conferences, meetings and workshops.

Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent in the field of physics, chemistry or another field relevant to the beamline is required, together with an outstanding track record in the area of structural biology using macromolecular crystallography and in development and application of methods for macromolecular crystallography with synchrotron radiation.
Experience in development, implementation, commissioning and operation of instrumentation for protein crystallography at either synchrotrons or XFELs is essential.
The successful candidate should also have an established track-record of publications and a proven capability in integrating a multidisciplinary and international research team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential.

The search will be opened on May 13th closed on July 15th, 2016. The appointment envisioned is a fixed term contract of an initial period of 36 months.
