Research Engineer - Transmission Electron Microscopy at the INL in Braga, Portugal

INL is seeking an Electron Microscopist to join the Advanced Electron Microscopy Imaging and Spectroscopy Facility (AEMIS) to support the facility in the general area of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), with a focus on the characterisation of beam sensitive samples using Cryo-TEM. The position is part of the CryoEM-PT National Advanced Electron Microscopy Network for Health and Life Sciences under which a state-of-the-art 200kV cryo-TEM will be soon installed at INL. The project has the following reference number: NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-081197.

Job Duties

The job duties will be the following:

  • Maintenance and operation of the new cryo TEM, a JEOL 2100 instrument and a FEI Quanta ESEM;
  • Train new users in the preparation of samples, as well as with the use of the aforementioned instruments and support tools;
  • Analyse samples for internal and external services requested.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Science or Engineering.

 

Experience

  • Experience with imaging of soft-matter/biological samples, including low-dose imaging, as well as 3D data acquisition and reconstruction;
  • Experience with sample preparation, especially biological samples and hands-on knowledge of supporting tools including cryo-ultramicrotome, plunge freezer, and critical point dryer;
  • Experience with TEM and SEM imaging techniques;
  • Experience with electron diffraction techniques;
  • Experience with MicroED;
  • Experience with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS);
  • Experience with image processing and standard software for electron microscopy.
