Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a postdoctoral researcher in the Crowley Laboratory, School of Chemistry, at NUI Galway.
This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available from 01/09/2016 to the contract end date 31/08/2018.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will be a recent PhD graduate with a background in protein science and a passion for studying assembly and interactions. You will work in a multidisciplinary team on a project focused on protein assembly using molecular glues (see McGovern et al. Nature Chemistry 2012).
The project will also build on our recent work on protein-polymer conjugates (Cattani et al. Nature Chemistry 2015) with the aim of developing a new strategy to engineer protein crystals.
Duties:
To conduct high-quality protein science in a collaborative environment
To purify proteins and characterize protein assemblies by using structural biology methods
To manage the project, including data collection / interpretation, manuscript preparation and publication
To participate in international meetings / conferences and data collection trips
To contribute to running the laboratory, including student supervision.
Qualifications/Skills required:
The ideal candidate will have a track record in protein science with proven experience in protein production and characterization.
Applicants must have a BSc in chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline and a PhD in protein science (e.g. structural biology, biophysics).
Experience in at least one of the following methods: NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, SAXS, ITC, SEC-MALS is essential.
Applicants will have at least one first author publication in an internationally-recognized journal.
Desirable criteria include experience in student supervision and ambition for a career in research / academia.
Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new projects; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
Salary: EUR37,750 - EUR42,394 per annum
