Jobs in Structural Biology and Related Fields

Postdoc in cryo-EM method development

Delft University of Technology, HZ Delft, Netherlands
Application deadline: 15 Aug 2023

TU Delft are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the research group of Arjen Jakobi at the Department of Bionanoscience at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience and Delft University of Technology. Their laboratory studies dynamic biomolecular processes in their native cellular environment using an approach that integrates cryogenic electron microscopy/tomography (cryo-EM/ET) imaging with single-molecule biophysics, protein biochemistry and cell biology. They also develop and apply new instruments and methods for imaging biological molecules at atomic resolution.

This is an ideal position for candidates with a background in structural biology or biophysics who have affinity for, and ideally a track record in, the development of new methods that help push the frontiers of molecular imaging. We also welcome applications of (bio)physicists with a background in instrument development, imaging physics and/or nanosystems engineering who are eager to explore molecular imaging of biological systems.

They offer a dynamic, supportive and collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities. The Department of Bionanoscience and Kavli Institute for Nanosciene in Delft provide outstanding infrastructure for nanofabrication (Kavli NanoLab), fluorescence microscopy, molecular/cell biology, protein biochemistry, single-molecule biophysics, cryo-EM/ET and high-performance computing. We foster a vibrant and open atmosphere that encourages interdisciplinary research and provides opportunities for personal and professional growth

Requirements

You have (or will soon complete) a PhD in structural biology, biophysics or a related field, and have experience and/or strong interest in methods development. They also welcome applications from candidates with a PhD degree in physics or nanosystems engineering who are motivated to venture into molecular imaging of biological systems.

- You have advanced knowledge and expertise in one or several of the following fields:

  • cryo-EM/cryo-ET and/or fluorescence microcopy
  • structural biology
  • micro/nanofluidics
  • MEMS/NEMS nanofabrication
  • protein biochemistry

- You ideally have experience in (or are willing to learn):

  • speciment vitrification
  • MEMS prototyping
  • instrument development
  • time-resolved (cryo-)EM
  • optical systems
  • Python programming
