PhD Position at the University of Osnabrück in Germany

Universität Osnabrück, 49069 Osnabrück , Germany
Application deadline: 24 Apr 2023

A fully funded PhD position has become available at the University of Osnabrück at the Structural Biology department of Prof. Arne Möller

The project aims at understanding the membrane protein complexes by leveraging the synergy between electron cryo-microscopy, crystallography, biochemistry, and electrochemistry to open a new avenue to understand anammox bioenergetics. Moreover, cryo-electron tomography, sub-tomogram averaging, and segmentation to study the molecular topology of the membranes of anammox bacteria to provide insights into the native landscape at molecular resolution.

They are based at the beautiful Westerberg Campus at the University of Osnabrück, providing world-class research environment and benefits. They are embedded in the CellNanOs community and the freshly funded collaborative research center: SFB 1557 - Functional plasticity encoded by cellular membrane networks. At CellNanOs, we have unrestricted access to a FEI Galcios 200 kV microscope with a Falcon 4 detector and a Selectris energy filter, as well as FEI Vitrobot IV, and a high-performance GPU cluster (64A40 GPUs).

What they expect:

An MSc or equivalent degree in Biology, Biochemistry or a related subject. Background in molecular cloning, expression, and purification of protein complexes is essential. Prior knowledge of single-particle electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography is a plus.

Good command of English (oral and written).

Curiosity, a strong motivation to excel in science, and a ‘can-do’ attitude.

A collaborative mind-set and good communication skills.

Good organizational skills.

A positive attitude towards interacting with colleagues from different backgrounds.

What we offer:

Doctoral student position for three years, paid according to German public service pay scale (65% E13 TVÖD Bund).

Competent mentoring and additional training events and courses.

A stimulating environment in a dynamic team of cooperative and motivated scientists.

Access to the world-class research environment and benefits.

Working and living in the beautiful town of Osnabrück.

How to apply:
