Postdoctoral and PhD student positions are available in the research group of Timm Maier at the Biozentrum (www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/maier), University of Basel, Switzerland, to study giant multienzymes, large regulatory complexes and membrane protein assemblies.
We employ a combination of structural biology techniques, including X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, XL-MS and SAXS at state-of-the-art level to resolve the architecture of large protein assemblies. For recent examples cf. Science 351, 48-52 (2016), Nature 531, 533-537(2016), Cell 160, 952-962 (2015). Additionally, we aim to visualize dynamics of multienzyme factories and transient regulatory interactions in eukaryotic protein complexes. Our group is embedded in the focal area “Structural Biology & Biophysics” of the Biozentrum, which offers a stimulating interdisciplinary environment. We collaborate intensely with researchers in the areas of cellular signaling and infection biology. Our team is supported by excellent in-house core facilities for electron microscopy, proteomics, imaging and biophysics; dedicated large scale computing resources are available.
We are looking for enthusiastic scientists who share our dedication to solving challenging problems in biology. Postdoc candidates should have obtained their PhD within the last 4 years or expect to complete their PhD soon. Ideal candidates are trained at state-of-the-art level in structural biology of large assemblies or membrane proteins using cryo-electron microscopy or X-ray crystallography; experience in eukaryotic protein production or multi-scale modelling is a plus. Postdoc candidates are expected to have demonstrated their scientific excellence by at least one strong published or upcoming first author paper. PhD candidates should have recently obtained or be about to obtain a master’s degree in biological sciences including hands-on lab work in molecular or structural biology and should be highly motivated to pursue science. Salaries start at 47040CHF/year for PhD students. The Biozentrum is dedicated to excellence in research and education and provides outstanding support and training for PhD students and Postdocs (www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/education). Basel is an international center for biomedical research, with major academic institutions and research departments of leading life science companies. Situated in Switzerland on the borders to France and Germany along the river Rhine, Basel offers a high quality of living and is home to a large expat community.
Please note that until June 20th prospective PhD students interested in joining the Biozentrum could apply for a prestigious Biozentrum fellowship with additional benefits (www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/education/phd/fellowship-program).
Please send your application as a single pdf document including CV, publication record and a concise outline of prior research experience together with contact details of up to three references to timm.maier@unibas.ch. Informal inquiries via e-mail are welcome.
