PhD and Postdoc Position at University of Groningen

University of Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands
Application deadline: 04 May 2017

Two positions are available within Professor Paulino’s group at the University of Groningen (UG), Netherlands:

(i) PhD fellowship position: founded for 4 years as a tax-free stipend.

(ii) Postdoctoral position: funded for 3 years, with the possibility of extension to become the EM facility manager (permanent position).

The group is seeking highly motivated communicative applicants with a strong interest in single-particle cryo-EM to work on elucidating the structure-function relationships that explain the transport mechanism of membrane proteins.

You will have access to a full equipped state-of-the-art EM lab, with a newly installed FEI Talos Arctica TEM equipped with a K2-summit camera, an energy filter and a phase plate on a full service contract.

Smaller microscopes for screening and a sample processing facility (including a Vitrobot) are available. For image processing you will have access to a powerful dedicated EM lab cluster and if necessary, access to the university cluster peregrine with more than 4000 cores. Notably, members of my group will be the main users of the cryo-EM facility, giving the candidate an exceptional high amount of access time at the microscope.

As a Dutch group, members of the lab have a privileged access to the EM facility NeCEN in Leiden with two FEI Titan Krios TEMs, if required.

The Paulino group is integrated in the Membrane Enzymology Group within the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB), and has full access to all facilities and instruments for protein expression, purification and biochemical analysis.

Here you will have the opportunity to explore your research project in a scientific environment with world-leading groups in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology and from a strong institutional commitment to advance cryo-EM at UG.

The PhD candidate should have a background in protein biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology or related areas. Experience in working with membrane proteins or in cryo-EM is preferable but not required.

The PostDoc candidate should have an extensive experience in sample preparation, operation of transmission electron microscopes (preferably on a FEI Polara, Titan Krios or Talos Arctica), and image processing.

Please send your CV, a short research experience/motivation letter and contact information for two or three letters of reference to c.paulino@rug.nl.

Earliest staring date is the 1st of August 2017.
