Northwestern University seeks to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) Facility Manager to join the Structural Biology Facility (SBF), located on the Evanston campus. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing a new Krios instrument and contributing to basic and translational research programs on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses. The SBF cryo-EM facility currently houses a TFS Glacios and JEOL 1400 TEM. In addition, a new TFS Krios G4 will be operational in September of 2025. The Krios is equipped with a Selectris energy filter and a Falcon 4i direct electron detector. Several instruments for sample preparation are also available as part of the SBF.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Train and assist users in cryo-EM sample preparation, screening, and data collection
  • Provide guidance to users on sample preparation, data collection, and the use of current image processing programs
  • Help with administration of the Krios related portion of SBF (scheduling, billing, report writing, grant writing)
  • Promote the Krios, and SBF in general, and participate in hands-on, group teaching of EM methods
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new EM experimental methods and protocols
  • Maintain instruments to ensure optimal performance and high-quality sample preparation and data acquisition at all times
  • Prepare samples and collect EM data for users who request staff service

 

Minimum qualifications:

Masters or Ph.D. degree with three years of hands-on cryo-EM experience in an EM laboratory.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics or related field
  • Experience in the use of TFS and JEOL microscopes and sample preparation
  • Experience with cryo-EM data collection software (SerialEM and/or EPU) and image processing software packages (Relion, CryoSPARC, etc.)
  • Prior experience with different aspects of structural biology research, such as data collection, structure determination, model building, and refinement
  • Excellent technical, teaching, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with others and as a team member
