Cryo-EM Staff Scientist

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Texas, United States
Application deadline: 31 Mar 2025

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is seeking a Staff Scientist to meet the growing needs of our cryo-EM laboratory. The UTHSA cryo-EM laboratory was commissioned in 2022 and is equipped with a Thermo Fisher Scientific, 200kV Glacios TEM, with a Falcon 4i direct electron detector, and Selectris Imaging Filter, along with all standard instrumentation for single particle EM sample preparation, and has already generated data published in high profile publications including Nature and Nature Communications. We are now seeking to expand the facilities’ capabilities.

The successful candidate will share responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the facility including grid freezing/clipping and conducting screening/data collection sessions.  The candidate should be a motivated and highly interactive individual and will have the opportunity to collaborate with internal users and external researchers on a diverse set of cryo-EM-focused research projects led by world-leading investigators in cancer biology, DNA repair, ubiquitin signaling, enzymology, and drug discovery.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Must have demonstrated experience with independently conducting screening and data collection sessions, ideally on a Glacios/Falcon4i/Selectris setup
  • Previous experience with cryo-transmission electron microscope alignments and maintenance, as well as maintenance of accessory equipment is strongly preferred
  • Must have demonstrated expertise with data collection and processing software for single particle analysis, including Relion and Cryosparc
  • Previous experience training students and staff in the operation of cryo-transmission electron microscopes and downstream data processing/analysis is preferred
  • Strong communication and organization skills to enable timely communication with faculty, students, staff, vendors, and service engineers, accurate and clear record keeping, and active participation in the planning and writing of manuscripts and center-related grant proposals as needed

This position provides attractive salary (commensurate with experience and qualifications) and generous benefits.

Interested candidates should e-mail a cover letter, CV, and the names of three references to olsens@uthscsa.edu
