Workshop on the Resolution Revolution in 3D cryo-EM
Training
Date: 11-Jan-2016 to 13-Jan-2016
Instruct
Recent advances in 3D cryo-EM of macromolecules and cells are revolutionizing structural biology. It is now possible to achieve atomic resolution of purified macromolecules without the need for crystallization, and to look at multiple functional states in a single sample. Cells and organelles can be visualized in unprecedented detail with newly-available technologies, particularly the direct detector (installed at the Weizmann Institute EM unit). This workshop will be organized around research lectures and methodological lectures (tutorials) highlighting the state-of-the-art in the field, as well as explaining the theory and practicalities of the techniques for the following tasks:
1. Single particle cryo EM for macromolecular structure elucidation at high resolution.
2. Cryo-EM cellular tomography including novel alternative methods such as cryo-STEM, cryo-FIB-SEM and cryo-Xray tomography.
3. Image processing techniques and molecular modeling for high-resolution structures and data validation tools.
Most invited international lecturers will give one scientific research talk and one tutorial workshop talk, providing technical and practical information on the latest developments in 3D cryoEM methodologies. We are exited that we were able to recruit top lecturers in this emerging field, with our aim being to familiarize the audience with the challenges and possibilities that recent revolutions in electron microscopy have opened.
Young researchers will have a chance to present short talks that will be selected from submitted abstracts, and there will be a poster session.
The course will include a tour of the facilities at the EM unit including demonstrations of some of the techniques.
