Aim:

The workshop on Computational Protein Design will provide practical hands-on training on innovative computational methodologies in the field of protein design by combining a variety of complementary computational methodologies, including:

Module 1. Conceptual design of non-natural catalytic functions based on a protein scaffold. Mechanistic assumptions derived from QM/MM calculations on gas phase models. Theozyme model of the transition state.

Module 2. Matching algorithms for crafting theozymes into a suitable catalytic site. Matching and Catalophore approaches for screening protein templates.

Module 3. Lead candidates for the rational design and refinement. Molecular dynamics simulation and analysis of the structural determinants.Module 4.Integrating sequence, structural and functional data for assisting the evaluation and ranking of lead candidates.Beside the four hands-on sessions assisted by computer-aided exercises on industrial relevant case studies, the Programme will include keynote lectures from eminent academic and industrial scientists in the field, from Switzerland, Israel, Austria, France, Germany and USA.

Location:

The Workshop will be held at the Library Auditorium of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT-NOVA), Caparica Campus, Portugal.

Dates:

13-15. September, 2016

Participants:

The workshop is primarily aimed at talented graduate and post-graduate students (including M.Sc., Ph.D., Post-docs and Researchers) with a background in computational science, bioinformatics, chemical and biochemical engineering.

During the course participants are encouraged to bring on debate their own scientific issues and discuss them with experts during the hands-on sessions.

How to Apply:

A limited number of 20 vacancies are available for eligible participants, which will be selected on a merit base of their applications, by the Scientific Committee. To apply, please register (here) and send an email attaching a letter of recommendation from your supervisor (if applicable), a motivation letter stating your research interests, including how attending the course will help with your project goals, and your CV (upon registration directly on the event website) to ricardo.branco@fct.unl.pt (subject: "CPD16 workshop application").

Deadline for applications: 30. June, 2016

The final list of participants will be announced to the awardees latest on July, 15th.

The course is FREE* of charge for those applicants coming from INSTRUCT member countries, (including 3-night accommodation, course documentation, coffee breaks and vouchers for lunch meals). For Academics from non-Instruct countries, the course will cost €250, and for Applicants from Industry €350.

* All selected applicants are expected to cover their own travel costs.

Accommodation:

Workshop participants will stay in the Fraústo da Silva Residence Halls, located at 5 min. walk distance from the Library Auditorium at Caparica Campus (https://goo.gl/maps/EjtfvwbYL1G2).

Payment: Instructions will be sent to successful applicants once the selection procedure is completed.

Scientific and Organizing Committee: Cecília Roque, José Moura and Ricardo Branco (UCIBIO-REQUIMTE, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, PT); Karl Gruber (ACIB, University of Graz, AT) and Jürgen Pleiss (ITB, University of Stuttgart, DE).
