The position is a permanent (tenured) public sector appointment.

The professorship is intended as a bridge between the Faculty of Medicine and the Helmholtz Institute for
Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). To this end, the professorship will also be affiliated with and supported by the HIPS with additional funding provided for scientific staff and research equipment.

The successful candidate will be expected to use cryogenic electron microscopy to generate high-resolution, three dimensional images of protein complexes and membrane proteins to yield information relevant to target validation of existing drugs in development and, through close cooperative ties with HIPS and Saarland University researchers in the area of bioinformatics, strengthen the areas of structure-based drug design, action mechanisms of antibacterial agents, and data-driven drug development. The person appointed to this position will have an excellent publication record and will be an expert in the field of structural biology, particularly with respect to cryogenic electron microscopy. Within the next five years, the appointee will be expected to establish a leading international research group in the area of structure driven drug development including the structural elucidation of small molecules.

We are looking for an individual with an established international reputation in their field and an outstanding record in both teaching and research who will contribute significantly to the progress of ongoing projects and will play a key role in establishing new interdisciplinary and interfaculty collaborative projects.
